Thoughts On Cover Art

Hi all! Been lurking here a while, so I figured it was about time I joined the party for real.

After having spent a bit of time looking back at some Duke cover art, I started wondering what sort of cover DNF should have. We've all seen this kick-ass image:

...which I personally love, but is that what you'd like to see on the cover of the final item? Has that piece of art been around too long to work on the cover of a brand new game? Or would you just prefer a cover in a totally different style (like the Duke 3D or Manhattan Project covers, or a different type altogether?)

i dont see that being the cover art especially since duke nukem dosent really look like that anymore, he has new "cooler" hair. i would think that they would make some newer cover art. but that is a cool image none the less :)

You may well have a point there Danule, but I'm not sure I'm convinced that Duke's hair really HAS changed yet. It definitely looks more rounded in that first thumbnail screenshot we got, but I figure theres a good chance thats just down to the angle/compression/lighting in the pic.

Maybe thats just me being optimistic though :) Hopefully we'll find out for sure with some new media soon!

And yep, that vegas shot is almost my favourite Duke shot, second only to the cover of Duke 3D B)

Here is what I heard on the website that told us about the Dnf showing up in 2008, it's relevant to the artwork topic as well:

I have seen it and it looks awesome. The team they have now is amazing. They got rid of all the slackers. From what I understand the new art team took all the old crappy stuff and redid it all in less than 8 months. All the guys that are there now, KNOW how to get it done. I would be shocked if it didn’t come out next year.

on topic: This pic is ok, although i hope they did get rid off those pedophile like looking glasses :) and replaced them with cooler shades B)

Hehe... Pedo glasses

Well, i personally like the STYLE of the cover... But it has become so known already though, that it would hardly feel fresh to any fans around...

So, maybe a similar pic in style (vegas in background, Duke somewhere in focus, and explosion somewhere) would work out...

Didn't some members create their own DNF covers?

The current DNF image needs to be changed as it's getting outdated. Something fresh would be nice, better yet have someone photoshop their own version of the DNF cover.

Thanks for posting everyone B)

I think I'm probably with Micki on this one - the style of the vegas image is just right, but releasing a game with such an old image on the cover would probably be a mistake.

I'd love to see a remake of the famous Duke 3D pose for the DNF cover - Duke standing over a pile of alien corpses, with the lights of vegas (and an explosion, of course) in the background.

As for the 'pedo glasses', I never really got the problem. Duke wears a classic style of shades because Duke isn't the kind of guy who gets blown about on the winds of fashion. I can't see Duke heading off to the shops because someone commented that his glasses were "so 1990's", can you? :)

I'm pretty sure that image was more along the lines of website\promotional graphics and never had anything to do with what the box art would look like. Given how the Duke3D box looked, I can't really ever imagine them having the DNF box look anything like that image that has been on their site for years.

I wonder who this tad guy is...he said he was there for an interview, maybe an interview to get hired...

Ehh, Micki! it seems we are not getting the same out of that quote, it seems to me that he claims he went there for a job interview, so not a journalism kind of interview.

"an interview to get hired..."

Yes, indeed.

Given the no further info(and assuming that interview claim is even true), I would make an educated guess and say that he didn't get the job.

this is also my guess. Also 3DR stopped hiring.

Huh ? How could you possibly know that ?

Edit:

Ahh, I see now the "We are not actively looking to hire at the moment, but you may send us a resume or portfolio. We can always make room for passionate and talented people. See details below." Very very interesting.

In a completely different note, H. Scott Maclean has updated his website yet again:

Quote

Six months since I updated. Not much has changed - everything is still going well. Things at work continue to make me jazzed to get up in the morning. Our team is just top-notch. I've been enjoying working on the levels I've been assigned, and everybody is responding well to the work I'm doing. In addition, the other designers continue to pump out work that just blows my mind. I'm really looking forward to the day when we can start showing off what we've been doing.

All in all, 2007 has shaped up to be a much more enjoyable year than 2006 was. :)

I noticed his update earlier this day. I'm wondering if he knows more about when they showing of their work?! How he says it, the day when they reveal DNF, seems so far away.

Nope, not really. He just doesn't know, from one of his previous updates:

I have no idea when we'll be releasing any information about the project, but I join everyone else in looking forward to the day when we can show off what we're working on.

Well he says that the team basically re-did all the art assets in about 8 months.

If true, this confirms earlier speculation of mine that George most likely ordered all the "then" current art scrapped sometime in 2005 which lead up to the mass departure of the team.

I knew something happened that lead to all the guys leaving. This tidbit(again, if true) is the missing piece to the puzzle on why alot of the guys left at the time. Not a total restart but a substantial delay(almost a year).

I figured as much when Tram hired on as lead art director.

Very interesting, but as always with 3D Realms one can't read too much into anything.

When Scott Maclean says "All in all, 2007 has shaped up to be a much more enjoyable year than 2006 was. :)"
Doesn't he mean in HIS private or professional life?
