Duke Nukem Eternity Mod Released!

Category: Duke3D
by Yatta, on Mon Mar 08 2010, 01:38AM

We apologize for the lack of updates in the past few weeks.  While there admittedly hasn't been much to report in the Duke Nukem Forever department, the Duke Nukem modding community has been making significant progress towards creating user-developed content reminiscent of Duke Nukem Forever.  Duke Nukem Eternity is probably the best looking mod out there for EDuke32 right now, and it plays somewhat like what you'd expect from DNF.

Duke Nukem Eternity is a 2 level episode utilising the wonders of eduke32's polymer system ,  Dukeplus,  & the HRP to create a unique Duke Nukem Experience. DNE is set at the start of the alien invasion in LA, The story is portrayed in a much more  modern way along with the gameplay. But none of this would have been possible if it were not for

TX & Plagman
- For creating eduke32 & polymer
Deeperthought - For making all the gameplay possible through Dukeplus
The HRP Team - For the tons of assets that give DNE its look
Black Rayne Studios - You make some awesome models, thanks a lot for supplying them
Darkcaleb - for converting and contributing some models, APC & Cop Cars , to name a few
The Commander - for the car exploding code
Muelesa - for the dukebike exploding code bit  added into the cars
VInsaneone - Cheers for the new duke lines
CGtextures - thanks for the new textures I used
The DNF3D Community Pack team :  Thanks to Daniel262b Fantinaikos, Jaxx, and supergoofy for contributing to this MAPS, New Skins EDF / LAPD / Pigcop Skins , strip club signs, and the terrible script  by DanM

AND EVERYONE AT DUKE4.NET, DUKE NUKEM REPOSITORY & MSDN FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND INTEREST IN THIS PROJECT.

The Soldiers Behind Duke Nukem Forever

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Wed Jan 13 2010, 02:40AM

Former 3D Realms employee and Duke Nukem Forever art director Tramell Isaac has updated his blog once more to talk about his last days at the company.  While some may not share his forgiving views on (allegedly) failed 3DR CEO George Broussard, it is as always evident that the employees at 3D Realms were tough, talented, and dedicated members of a diligent development team that faced an unfortunate end.  Isaac reinforces this best in the following quote:

NO ONE gave up. Not a single person on that team wanted it to end, let alone end the way it did. As a matter of fact I know for sure that many people made sure that they wrapped up what they were working on and checked their data in before leaving that very day. Not because they were told to but because they cared about the project. They respected DNF enough to leave it with pride.

Well said, Tramell;  I think I speak for the entire community when I say that our best wishes go to all the former 3D Realms employees who worked on Duke Nukem Forever, and who are now flourishing at their new places of work.

Jon St. John on Duke Nukem Forever

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Wed Jan 06 2010, 05:41PM

Pixel Enemy reports that Jon, who voices Duke Nukem, had a panel discussion at the January 1-4 Music and Gaming Festival (MAGFest).  When a fan asked about Duke Nukem Forever, Jon advised him to "read between the lines."

I’m not allowed to speak on that subject, sir.

He’s asking about Duke Nukem Forever, let me go ahead and tell you right now that I’m not allowed to talk about Dukem Nukem Forever.

No, no, don’t be disappointed, read between the lines… why am I not allowed to talk about it?

Here's a short clip of the conversation (pardon the annoying ads--it's not our fault):

Jon's full panel video is available here.  Thanks to jayblings and Benjamin Foley for the heads up!

Category: Duke Nukem
by RedSplat, on Sun Jan 03 2010, 06:57PM

HMC, an indie production house based in Finland created this movie trailer featuring Duke Nukem.   And they would like your opinion on it.
Maybe, if enough people enjoyed this, they'll make a short film.

There are 1080p and 720p downloadable versions available at HMC's website.

I hope they make the movie. Preferably with blonde babes, kthx.

Scott Miller Promises New Duke Games

Category: Duke Nukem
by Yatta, on Sun Dec 27 2009, 01:52AM

Shacknews reports:

The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke," Miller states in the first printed issue of Gamesauce. "There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production.  Almost all of these [projects] are unannounced."

Interestingly enough, Scott also claims that works on Duke Nukem Forever and a Duke Nukem movie have not halted despite 3D Realms' internal problems.  Finally, he talks cash:

Duke Nukem 3D was made for $300,000, and we made back 25 times our investment--not to mention all of the third-party Duke console games that sold well. Plus, we made a killing with Wolfenstein 3D. And we made the biggest killing on Max Payne! We made $30 million in royalties on that game (off of a $2.5 million investment), plus another $48 million selling the IP to our publisher. Oh, and we were also part owners of Gathering of Developers when that was sold to Take2. And finally, we have been pretty lucky with other investments, both in the stock market and in other studios.

Granted 3DR had to lay off its internal development team, most of that money is probably gone.  Read the full article at Shacknews.

Wired´s Rise and Fall of DNF and 3D Realms

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Tue Dec 22 2009, 09:23PM

thumb_fail_duke_nukem_f.jpgThree months ago, I was contacted by Wired magazine to do an interview for a feature article on the rise and fall of Duke Nukem Forever.  Little did I know about how awesome Learn to Let Go: How Success Killed Duke Nukem would turn out, or how informative it would be--there are details about the game in the article that I never knew about, including the possiblity that DNF had five hours of gameplay even back in 2007:

Ironically, the end was within reach, even if Broussard couldn’t see it. Raphael van Lierop, who was hired in 2007 as a creative director, was given several pieces of the game to play. It took him about five hours. Broussard was stunned; he’d thought those levels would take half that time to get through. “You could see the gears turning, with him thinking, ‘Oh wow — maybe we’ve got more game than we think,’” says van Lierop. Broussard had been staring at the game for so long, he’d lost perspective.

The article talks about how George Broussard and Scott Miller kick-started their career and how 3D Realms rose to power with Duke Nukem 3D, but hit the ground hard after constantly delaying DNF and in turn being sued by their publisher.  The amount of money involved (millions!) and the figures pertaining to 3DR/DNF as mentioned in the article are pretty mesmerizing.  There are various anonymous quotes from former employees in there as well, describing some of the internal problems arising from bad management:

thumb_fail_duke_nukem7_f.jpg
But because the technology kept getting better, Broussard was on a treadmill. He’d see a new game with a flashy graphics technique and demand the effect be incorporated into Duke Nukem Forever. “One day George started pushing for snow levels,” recalls a developer who worked on Duke Nukem Forever for several years starting in 2000. Why? “He had seen The Thing” — a new game based on the horror movie of the same name, set in the snowbound Antarctic — “and he wanted it.” The staff developed a running joke: If a new title comes out, don’t let George see it.

The arranagement of events regarding the development of Duke Nukem Forever, in addition to the supporting quotes, are quite fantastic.  Much of the drama dancing around the game's development is covered, and it would be a shame for any fan not to give this article a quick look, if not a nice thorough read.

Many thanks to Rafael and Clint for bringing the release of this article to our attention!
